The power of intent

For many years, I have refined my end-of-year-prep-for-the-new-year process into something that works for me. I abandoned New Years’ Resolutions and created a structure that started with me identifying a theme for my year.

Each year, my theme would reflect what I felt was missing from the year that was coming to a close. I would then look at the various areas of my life and see how I wanted the theme to be reflected in that area. This could then guide my actions for the rest of the year.

Part of my rationale for this process was that setting resolutions often left me feeling like a failure if I did not achieve what I said I wanted to. This is because the very nature of resolutions leaves them open to a pass/fail kind of assessment.

By starting with a theme, I felt I had something to focus on so that even if I did not achieve something specific, I could still see whether I had, in fact, maintained my theme as planned.

There is a word for this: INTENTION. Without realizing it, I had been setting intentions for myself and using the intent to drive my pursuit of goals. Intent is a determination to act in a certain way, a powerful internal guiding force that connects choice and action, guiding towards or away from an outcome.

Despite my thinking that I was largely directionless, it seems I was being very intentional about my own personal growth all along.

This may seem like something fairly basic, but it was an epiphany for me. Now I just need to harness the power of intent to truly move towards a more purposeful life.

A powerful exercise I was taken through recently was to consider the following questions:

  • What is my intent for this class?
  • What is my intent for the rest of today?
  • What is my intent for the next month?
  • What is my intent for the rest of the year?
  • What is my intent for the rest of my life?

Answering these questions for myself was very revealing, as I started to see how powerful the “energetic impulse” of intent can be. The layers of intent that weave through the answers to the questions illustrate what it is that you consider truly important.

When you then align your goals to your intent, you can achieve amazing things!
