Time for a break
“Why take vacation now when you can’t go anywhere?” This is the reaction of quite a few people when I explain that I’ve taken 2 1/2 weeks off from work in the middle of a pandemic when we are under lockdown.
Funnily enough, my team that I manage and my boss immediately understood and responded with “It’s about time!” Lol! Despite my best efforts, it seems I was demonstrating the signs of needing a break.
It has actually been long overdue, and I have been working since the end of August without a break. I am deliberately not counting the 6 weeks sick leave before that, because there really was nothing restful about that. So technically, my last vacation from work was last year July.
How do I know when I need a break? I feel it. My brain is tired, my body is tired, my spirit is tired. I drag myself through my days, and dread waking up each morning because I have to do it all again. And I was there.
So I requested to take my overdue leave, even though we’re in a pandemic. I left a team member in charge of the others, wrapped up the things I was working on, did some handover, and turned off my weekday alarms, lol
It is important to know yourself, and know when to take a step back. It is the only way you can move forward.
